The newly formed Advanced Forming Research Centre (AFRC) has secured substantial funding to develop a new facility in collaboration with a range of industrial partners carrying out research into forging and forming processes. Research topics include developing both incremental change and disruptive technologies in materials and manufacturing processes related to hot working in metals. As part of this work, a need has been identified for Rotary and Radial Forging Equipment capable of testing and manufacturing components for the aerospace and automotive industries which shall be tendered in 2 lots; Lot 1 – Rotary forging machine (for the creation of external cones and flanges on cylinders). Lot 2 – Radial forging machine (for the creation of cylinders with varying cross-section). This equipment will be used in the AFRC laboratory for both research purposes and full scale production trials to demonstrate full manufacturing capability for a range of components. This will include the manufacture of shaped billets and preforms in high strength steels and high temperature alloys for aerospace and automotive applications. The AFRC are also interested in novel solutions to machine control and process monitoring, as well as new approaches in forming technology.
