Expansion of a Centralized VDI infrastructure for courses at EPFL.

At the EPFL, a lot of courses that are dispensed all across the school, within different faculties, are currently given in a traditional way (applications are installed on physical PC dedicated to courses, or students' laptops), but a new centralized service has been opened for the new academic year 2015/2016. It is a virtual desktop solution (VDI) used for courses. This service is used by several faculties. This existing VDI infrastructure provide virtual desktops either in Windows or Linux Operating systems including features like 3D within the VMs. Today the infrastructure is sized to support 950 VMs provisioned and 740 concurrent connections. The end users connect to their virtual desktops either through their own laptops (BYOD) with a native client or through a HTML5 compatible web browser or through Thin Clients. This solution is actively used and have faced a strong success upon its 1 st days of usage. With this solution, application oriented courses for massive classes (more than 300 students simultaneously) have been addressed. Now, the new demands to use the service have to be answered.
