II .1.6.1 – Overall objectives The current source of energy in use at the University of Malta, is electrical energy obtained from the national grid. The project, proposes to install Photovoltaic (PV) systems on the roof of the Biosciences Building, the Chemistry Building and the Students House at the University of Malta, that will eventually contribute to Government policies concerning, energy generation through renewable energy sources (RES), specifically photovoltaic systems, and reduction of CO2 footprint, with consequent environmental benefits to society. The project aims at:— — using RES, specifically PV systems, for electrical energy generation; — reducing grid-energy demand at the University of Malta Campus; — reducing the current CO2 footprint of the University of Malta; — placing PV energy generation data on line; The project proposes the installation of photovoltaic panels on the roofs of specific buildings on Campus in order to generate approx. 15 to 20% of the energy needs of the detailed buildings. The relevant generation data will be put on line, thereby raising public awareness on the use of Renewable Energy Sources. It is expected that 300 MWh will be generated annually with a corresponding reduction of 260 tonnes in CO2 emissions.
