Doncaster Council is actively seeking to improve the range of services which it commissions to provide Short Breaks for disabled children. The Council wishes to promote the welfare needs of children and young people and to meet the needs of families with caring responsibilities.
Short Breaks are intended to have positive benefits for both disabled children and young people and their parents and carers. Short Breaks have a dual purpose in that they allow children and young people to enjoy experiences outside the family home and develop new skills and confidences; they also allow parents and carers to have a break from caring responsibilities, rest, unwind and spend time with other members of their family.
Short Break provision can range for a few hours a week to an allocated number of overnight breaks per year.
Short Breaks can include day, evening, overnight and weekend activities and may take place in the child's own home, the home of an approved short break carer, or a residential.
