Fish Friendly Retrofit of 2 Vertical Kaplan Hydroturbines.

Retrofit of 2 Kaplan vertical hydro turbines in order achieve power plant life-time extension while complying with fish-friendly hydrodynamic characteristics. Since 1950's, EDFL is operating a cascade of 6 low head, run-off river hydro power plants along the River Meuse, in Belgium. Among those plants, the Monsin power station (1954) needs rehabilitation works. Plant is now equipped with 3 full Kaplan units, 5,6 m diameter of the runner. Performance is 6,5 MWe per unit, under a maximum gross head of 5,7m and flow 131 m³/sec. Scope of works is the replacement of 2 units (turbine & generator) within the existing civil works by minimizing the concrete structure modifications.
