Safety Case Engineering Support

The Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE) herein after referred to as the Purchaser carries out research into the use of controlled nuclear fusion for the generation of power and is based in Oxfordshire, UK. Based at the Culham Science Centre are the JET (Joint European Torus) facilities. The JET facilities consist of the largest tokamak research machine in the world, an Active Gas Handling Plant and a number of support facilities. The hazards involved include ionising and non-ionsing radiation, radioactive contamination, toxic chemicals, HV electric supplies and other industrial hazards. The facilities are not licensable under the Nuclear Installation Act 1965. In addition at the Culham Science Centre is the MAST (Mega amp spherical tokamak). The Authority operates MAST, which forms part of the UK and European Fusion Programme with the aim of magnetically confining and studying the behaviour of a plasma in conditions and dimensions approaching those required in a fusion reactor. Safety Cases for all facilities having a significant radiological, toxic or high voltage hazard have been produced and technical support for the maintenance and updating of these Safety Cases is now required, involving safety case preparation, hazard identification analysis. In particular the main JET Torus Safety Case is to be updated in preparation for the next D-T campaign and preparation of Safety Cases to support the MAST facility upgrade.
