‘Shomoshti: Prosperity for the poor’ will achieve a better well-being for poor and disadvantaged through a combined approach of facilitating markets …

Through the Shomoshti project, 900 000 rural households (3 900 000 people) will use improved technical services, which will result in better prices and higher yields. This will be achieved through the organizational capacity building of producer groups and the facilitative support to private and public service providers for developing services in agriculture and cottage industries which are relevant and affordable to the poor and disadvantaged. At the same time, the project will empower the households to put forward their joint demands for social services to public and private service providers. Last but not least, the households will be supported in household expenditure planning and the use of savings systems. The Shomoshti project will address market constraints which affect the participation of the poor and disadvantaged through dialogue with local government institutions and policy-setting government agencies at the national level. Above described interventions will result in phase 1 of the project in 3 outcomes: 1. 200 000 rural households use improved technical and available social services. 2. Private and public providers offer improved services to agriculture and cottage industry producers which are affordable and relevant to the poor and disadvantaged. 3. Local government institutions and policy makers at national level are responsive to is-sues of equitable access to markets and social services demanded by rural households and private service providers.
