The UK Met Office runs a network of five operational wind profilers, comprising of four boundary-layer profilers and one troposphere/stratosphere profiler. These provide near real-time vertical profiles of data through the atmosphere that are used for forecasting, nowcasting models and warning services. Data from these instruments also forms the UK Met Office contribution to the European wind profiler network (E-PROFILE). A requirement exists to continue producing operational wind profiles using ground-based systems for at least another 5 years, and possibly as much as 10 years. The UK Met Office currently faces ongoing issues in regards to obsolescence and spares availability for the current systems, most immediately PC servers and phase shifters. The intent with this Prior Information Notice is to enable the UK Met Office to inform options for the planned upcoming procurement of Wind Profiling equipment. The requested offering is likely to be in the form of either; 1) upgrades to existing profiler equipment, or 2) the provision of new profilers that meet the required operational accuracy. Objectives for the procurement: 1. Maintain continuity of wind profiler operations. 2. Reduce the whole life cost of wind profiler operations. Options for the procurement: 1. Provision upgrades to extended operational life of existing systems for a further 5 to 10 years. 2. Provision of replacements systems to extend wind profiler operations for a further 5 to 10 years.
