The works will involve the construction of high quality public realm and landscaping in the Shawfield area of Glasgow. The key components of the contract will include: Construction of new pedestrian and cycling thoroughfares. Construction of public realm plazas and areas of hardstandings. Construction of a new riverside walkway and seating terraces. Construction of SUDS drainage including a new pond and associated swales. Planting of formal tree avenues, structure woodland, ornamental shrubs and ground cover, and turfing / seeding. The implementation of street furniture items. The implementation of lighting and electrical works including a new 11kv substation. The implementation of other services such as water and telecoms infrastructure. An extensive programme of ground remediation works and the creation of development platforms will be progressed by others in advance of the public realm works noted above. The public realm contractor will be expected to liaise with the remediation contract personnel and programme his works accordingly. The contractor will note that a new pedestrian bridge over the River Clyde is also to be constructed by others in advance of the public realm contract and liaison is also likely to be required between the bridge contractor and the public realm contractor. The public realm contractor will also be required to take cognisance of an Invasive Species strategy and protected species strategy although mitigation works are to be undertaken by other parties. A significant component of the works will be expected to be complete in advance of the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Two new key pedestrian and cycling thoroughfares are proposed to form a public realm and landscape framework for future development: The first thoroughfare will include a 300m long and 4.7m wide pedestrian and cycling path linking the new pedestrian bridge and the junction of Glasgow Road / Rutherlgen Road. The second thoroughfare will include a 375m long and 4.7m wide pedestrian and cycling riverside path linking the same bridge with Shawfield Road. These main thoroughfares will be constructed with a mix of high quality stone and / or concrete paving, as well as coloured asphalt. The thoroughfares will be capable of light vehicle loading to permit maintenance access. The riverside path will be constructed on the slopes of the riverbank. Works to the riverbank will also incorporate a new stepped amphitheatre and terraces as well as a series of secondary paths. There is requirement to construct a 25nr space car park and associated road access infrastructure. Other pedestrian hardstanding areas will be constructed in various materials including concrete / stone paving, asphalt, self-binding aggregate, and gravel. In association with the proposed hard public realm construction there is a requirement for the contractor to deliver extensive areas of planting. This will include formal tree avenue planting with Extra Heavy Standards as well as extensive woodland structure planting on the riverbank. There will be a requirement to seed and / or turf large areas of amenity grass and establish wildflower meadows on development platforms. There will be a requirement to implement riparian planting in association with SUDS ponds and swales. All planting will have to be established on imported topsoil. The Contractor will be required to establish and maintain the landscaping works for a period of three years post completion. The contractor will be expected to implement street furniture items such as benches, litter bins, bollards and lighting columns, as well as fencing and hoarding. In addition to lighting there will be a requirement to coordinate and implement various items of utility infrastructure including a new 11kv substation, electrical cabling, CCTV, water infrastructure, telecoms cabling etc. The coordination will include liaison with utility providers. It should be noted that the highest standards of quality and workmanship will be expected to deliver this high profile contract.
