With the planned growth of 6 000 new homes, associated schools, community facilities and the development of 40 hectares of employment land adjacent to the existing urban area of Weston-super-Mare over the next 15 years, it has been determined that two areas flood storage areas are required. Please see Appendix A &B for location and basic design details. North Somerset Council is seeking suitably qualified and experienced contractors to construct these storage areas and associated infrastructure. The storage areas are shallow excavations, between 1 and 1.5 meters deep resulting in the removal of some 500 000 m³ of soil. The installation of water control structures including head walls, flap valves, spillways and culverts/pipes will be required on the adjacent rhynes plus 3 000 meters of maintenance access tracks. These elements must comply with the requirements of the Environment Agency and Internal Drainage Board. To facilitate recreational access the construction of approx 3 000 m of surfaced footpaths and installation of 3 bridges (6-12 m long) are required, together with associated landscaping, tree planting and seeding of the sites once excavation is complete. The works will be supervised by representatives of North Somerset Council and senior staff from the successful contractor will be required to attend regular progress meetings with council officers, the Environment Agency, the Internal drainage Board and the major developers.
