It is the intention of the NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT), to set up common procedures across Englandand North Wales for managing the handling and disposal of large quantities of clinical and small quantities ofGenetically Modified (GM), chemical and radioactive waste emanating from our activities (this may or may notbe a requirement throughout the period of the contract). Clinical waste is generated from blood donor collection teams, blood donor clinics and blood processingCentres. The Authority also generates small levels of GM, radioactive and chemical waste. NHSBT reserves the right to award the contract on either a National or Regional basis. 2 Scope of Service. — The contract will cover bulk site storage containers, collection and final disposal. — It applies to all sites owned/managed by the National Blood Service (NHSBT), refer to Appendix 1. Please notethis list is not exhaustive and subject to change through the course of the Contract period. — It applies to all clinical waste generated by NHSBT in carrying out their business. However, waste categorisedas Offensive Waste (EWC 18 01 04) may, at the discretion of NHSBT, be sent to a contractor outside of thiscontract. — The waste contains a high percentage of wet plasma waste and small amounts of tissue waste refer toAppendix 2 for estimated waste levels. — The regularity of collection from each site has to be agreed, most collections are Monday to Friday includingBank Holidays at no extra cost. (NB Tissue Services at Liverpool may need more frequent collections, followingconsolidation of services at this site). The current collection schedules and proposed changes are includedwithin Appendix 1. — The successful Contractor will be expected to work in Partnership with NHSBT to review innovative solutionsto reduce costs; environmental impact and health and safety risks. — The successful Contractor must meet all regulatory requirements and current guidance with respect to thisservice. — The successful Contractor must provide evidence of appropriate: disposal; risk assessments, environmentalmanagement (including Duty of Care Audits). — The cost per tonne for clinical waste disposal must be standard across the service. — Clinical waste transport costs may vary from location to location. — Agreed performance reports, regarding the contract, must be provided each month. — The Contractor must ensure that whilst undertaking the Service provision that they in no way adversely affectthe business continuity of NHSBT. — The Contractor must ensure that all containers delivered to NHSBT locations are empty and in a cleancondition (compliant to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP).
