The Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) [United Kingdom] is seeking to license the running of its green flag award scheme to an external body for a period of 5 years with the option to extend the licence for a further period of 5 years. The scheme has UK Government support to continue past 31 October, the end of its current arrangement and it is the intention that the Green flag award scheme will run under license from 1.11.2012. While there is a small level of transitional funding available to the successful licence, the scheme will be financially self-sufficient and will not receive payment from the Contracting Authority. The green flag award is the UK’s national standard for public green space, currently used by local authorities in the UK for green space management. The awards are also increasingly being used by communities to maintain and improve the quality of precious green spaces such as parks, community gardens, woodlands, and allotments. The green flag award accreditation scheme has been running continuously since 1996 and is seen as a way of encouraging high environmental management standards as well as setting the benchmark of excellence in recreational green spaces.
