Diamond is a new synchrotron light source at the site of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire. Diamond is the largest scientific research facility to be built in the UK for 30 years, and produces ultra-violet and X-ray beams of exceptional brightness, allowing pioneering experiments to be carried out which probe deep into the basic structure of matter and materials. The facility comprises a 3 GeV electron storage ring, injected from a 100 MeV linac through a full energy booster synchrotron, and a growing number of beamlines. There are approximately 49 peripheral laboratories which provide support to the beamline users and Diamond scientists. The laboratories are divided into chemical, biological, workshops (mechanical & electrical), laser and optics.
