(i) (Essential) a base resolution of at least 3 µm. (ii) (Highly desirable) maximum magnification of 150 x. (iii) (Essential) a measurement range of at least (300 × 300 × 700) mm. (iv) (Highly desirable) a 225 kV source. (v) (Desirable) a number of target options (i.e. reflection and transmission targets). (vi) (Essential) a flat panel detector. (vii) (Essential) acquisition PC plus an additional high-end analysis PC. (viii) (Essential) coordinate meteorology software. (ix) (Essential) financial commitment to support at least 1 research student (at PhD level) to start in the next year. (x) (Highly desirable) a willingness to collaborate on research projects to improve the meteorological performance of the instrument. (xi) (Highly desirable) maintenance contract to run for 3 years and to include: — 2 preventative maintenance visits per year, — 2 day response for all technical issues, all spare parts supplied at no cost, upgrades to latest versions of all software. (xii) (Essential) at least 3 days training in the use of the instrument and analysis software.
