Mit Hilfe des „environmental“ Rasterelektronenmikroskop (ESEM) sollen Proben im Niedervakuummodus untersucht werden.
In Standard Rasterelektronenmikroskopen liegen Hochvakuumbedingungen in der Probenkammer vor, „variable pressure“ (VP) Rasterelektronenmikroskope erlauben Betriebsdrücke bis zu maximal 500 Pa.
In einem ESEM kann bei Drücken bis zu 4000 Pa gearbeitet werden.
