Supply & instal creep & superplastic forming press.

The press will be used in the AFRC laboratory for both research activity and larger scale production trials. In SPF mode it will be required to produce single- and multi-sheet components in various superplastic alloys, although primarily in titanium in the range 850-950°C (the facility to form aluminium and magnesium alloys at lower temperatures (300-500°C) and gamma titanium-aluminides at higher temperatures (1 000-1 100°C) would be advantageous). In creep forming mode the press will use matched tooling to form single sheets or flat bonded titanium packs into the required geometry. In single-sheet SPF a heated workpiece is formed into a shaped die by the application of gas pressure to the sheet. The gas is applied through a pipe or duct that is usually located in the top die. In multi-sheet forming matched die sets are used and gas is injected inside a bonded multi-sheet structure to form the part shape. The press will be required to perform both types of cycle. The forming gas will typically be argon, and gas will be supplied from a bottled source. Forming pressures will vary throughout the cycle, in the range from 0 to 7MN/m2 (0 to 70 bar). The press will be used to form a number of different component sizes but, to provide a scale, we are interested in approximately 2 500x2 000 mm hot-platen area and 1 500 mm stroke (2 000 mm daylight), with an appropriate tonnage to allow both creep and superplastic forming. Suppliers should state the maximum part size that can be manufactured on their press. The press and equipment should reflect industrial systems but, as a research tool, should have an integrated control system to monitor and record data throughout each forming cycle. Both metal and ceramic dies will be used on the press. For ceramic dies an explosion-resistant chamber around the heated zone is required to contain any catastrophic die failures which, although rare, can potentially occur if a tear in the sheet metal workpiece leads to gas injection into fissures in the ceramic die surface. It is also intended to use the press for assessing the benefits of novel heating systems and consequently the platen system will need to be removable or sufficiently robust to allow the location of alternative die configurations. It is likely that access panels in the side heat shields will be needed to allow cabling and compressed air gas lines into the tooling area and to facilitate piece alignment during creep forming. An outline specification for the press is provided below. Requirements of type MR are non-negotiable minimum standards, but in general we are inviting suppliers to provide innovative technical proposals detailing how the stated requirements will be met.
