High Performance File System for Data Acquisition and HPC (DLSITT0380).

Diamond Light Source (DLS) wishes to deploy another highly resilient, high performance file system in our data centre. This new file system will operate next to our existing Lustre and GPFS file systems and will allow us to support the high demands of increasing data rates generated by our detectors as well as increased processing on the collected data. DLS expects this file system to provide: — at least 2 PB of usable RAID storage; — at least 30 GB/s sustained aggregate read and write throughput to our clients; — at least 900 MB/s sustained aggregate read and write throughput from a single client; — sufficient meta data performance to allow fast data acquisition to be unaffected by data processing. We expect this to require at least 8 TB of SSD storage for the expected number of files (~ 2 x 109). The clients accessing the file system will include InfiniBand (IB) connected compute nodes as well as detectors and other clients connected via Ethernet (10 GbE or 1 GbE depending on performance requirements). Current experience shows that both Lustre and GPFS have different strengths and weaknesses, affecting our ability to use either file system for certain tasks. It is expected that the chosen storage system will support both file systems and we intend to choose the file system to be deployed at a later stage of the tender process, based on tests conducted in cooperation with the vendors who are selected to participate in the dialogue. We expect the vendors in the dialogue will have direct relationships with the storage system hardware manufacturers, and also (possibly through these manufacturers) have demonstrated deployment experience with the GPFS and/or Lustre technologies. Notwithstanding this, Diamond Light Source reserves the right to purchase only the storage system as part of this tender and deploy the selected file system in house or with third party support. If this option is chosen Diamond would expect to receive full support in tuning the storage system, as well as best practice recommendations for any required settings on the server side to achieve optimal performance. Computer room constraints will require the storage system to be installed in existing 19'' racks and high density in the racks will be essential. We expect the complete system including all disk storage systems, all necessary servers and network switches to be installed in no more than 2 racks, occupying no more than 40 U per rack.
