Macfarlan Smith Ltd extracts naturally occurring pharmaceutical compounds from poppies and a by product of the process is a poppy straw waste. In order to satisfy their sustainability principles of achieving zero waste and halving the key resources that they consume per unit output by 2017, Macfarlan Smith Ltd require an alternative disposal route to landfill. SRUC/SAC Commercial Ltd/SAC Consulting have a contract with Macfarlan Smith and as part of this contract are required to source a third party contractor to haul, store and spread this waste under a Registration of Exempt Activity, Schedule 1, Paragraph 7 (the Exemption is held by SAC Commercial Ltd).
