Manufacture of Carbon-Carbon Fibre Composite Material for High Heat Flux and High Vacuum Applications.

The UK Atomic Energy Authority is a non-departmental government body carrying out research into the potential of nuclear fusion as a future source of energy. The Authority has a requirement for a material for high heat flux and high vacuum applications. Potential suppliers are requested to supply details of their available grades of carbon-carbon fibre composites. Of particular interest to the Authority are: — The thermal conductivity at 200 degrees centigrade, this should be in excess of 190 W/(mK) in at least 2 directions and in excess of 50 w/(mK) in the remaining direction; — The flexural strength which should be above 80 MPa; — Low thermal expansion coefficient and high density (above 1 700 kg/m 3 ) which are an advantage; — High-purity (less than 100 ppm impurities). The material is required in block sizes in excess of 190 mm x 400 mm x 65 mm. Approximately, 50 pieces are required. This PIN has been published to enable market research to commence to asses the reaction of the market to the proposed requirement and review available technologies. The Authority will conduct a dialogue with the marketplace. This may result in a call for competition based on the content of the requirement achieved through the dialogue.
