Geofencing Track Worker Warning System

Network Rail identified Geofencing technology as a potential addition to the Safe System of Work (SSoW), to improve the safety of trackside working. Maintenance and construction personnel working trackside is one of the highest risk environments across the Network Rail estate. The activities conducted by these workers are complex and require significant attention, and many near misses occur when workers lose situational awareness of their surroundings and accidentally stray outside of safe areas. Near misses are incidents in which no property is damaged, and no personal injury was sustained, but where, given a slight shift in time or position, damage or injury could easily have occurred. In light of this, Network Rail have completed the ‘Geofencing Track Worker Warning System Design Contest’ to develop, explore and trial a selection of proposed design solutions that would help to address this current challenge. Network Rail invited applicants to participate in the Design Contest by submitting a design or plan which addresses this challenge. Following the completion of Design Contest, Network Rail have selected 3 Design Contest winners.
