HE-ESA-005 - Engineering support and development of unified GNSS and 5G/6G testbed for enhanced PNT

The activity is structured on three pillars: design and development of a unified GNSS and 5G Advanced testbed, basic research into 6G localization, and 3GPP standardisation work. To continue, it covers a number of standardization and R&D activities to be performed: engineering support during 3GPP Release 19, Release 20 and preparation for beyond, carry out engineering trade-offs to foster the combined use of 5G Advanced and GNSS for precise and reliable localization, and design a concept for 6G PNT based on a number of candidate enabling technologies and architectures recommended by ESA (e.g., NTN, THz, etc.). A key outcome of this activity consists in the delivery, installation, and operation of a unified GNSS and 5G+ testbed designed to hybridise GNSS and beyond 5G positioning capabilities in real-time. This activity belongs to Galileo/EGNOS Upstream R&D which is part of the space component of Horizon Europe. Under this Space Component of the Horizon Europe, in line with the signed FFPA and relevant CA, ESA is delegated by the European Commission to manage this activity and ESA adapted procurement rules apply, as per the ITT to be published (Open Competition).
